TSI petrol engines

The state-of-the-art injection engines behind these three letters combine impressive power with excellent fuel efficiency.

Direct injection and turbocharging make the 2.0 l TSI engines with 110 kW¹/150 kW² thriftier and more powerful than other petrol engines. The 150 kW unit² is available with a manual gearbox or DSG – optionally with 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

4MOTION

The most attractive places often wait just around the next corner. You may encounter a few surprises on your way there: mud tracks, loose gravel, steep inclines, snow or rain – but this won’t cause any delay as the California can be equipped with 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive. Should a wheel lose traction due to poor weather conditions or uneven surfaces, 4MOTION intervenes and variably distributes torque between the front and rear axle. For you, this means a safe journey, even off the beaten track, when driving on demanding slopes or through shallow water.

TDI engines

The latest generation of 2.0 l common rail TDI engines: diesel power has never been so fuel-efficient and low in emissions.

A combination of small displacement, turbocharging and direct injection makes the TDI engines exceptionally efficient. Precise injection under high pressure means that the fuel burns evenly so that the engines deliver high output yet have low consumption. Low maintenance costs also contribute to the economy of these engines. A 2.0 l TDI engine with four different power outputs and a 2.0 l 132 kW¹ BiTDI are available for the California.

Off-road capability

The more leeway this gives you, the more leeway you have when looking for camping sites. The California can even cope virtually effortlessly with crests having a ramp angle of up to 14° (measured with standard equipment and full load).

Driving on inclines is also no problem. Due to the wheelbase, the bumpers do not make contact with the ground even when the approach angle is 21°. The maximum departure angle is 17° (measured with standard equipment and full load).

Thanks to a wading depth of up to 300 mm you can drive the California on roads flooded after heavy storms or cross water with a depth of up to 30 cm with virtually no difficulty (measured with full load and a maximum of 30 km/h).

Serpentine bends and steep inclines of up to 37° are mastered almost effortlessly by the California with a 132 kW¹ engine and a vehicle weight of 3,000 kg.

7-speed dual clutch gearbox DSG

The optional fully automatic transmission changes gears without inflow. When the gearbox is in manual mode, a gear recommendation is given on the instrument cluster to help you drive fuel-efficiently. In conjunction with BlueMotion Technology and a multifunction display, the 103 kW¹ and 132 kW² engines have a coasting function: if the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the engine is temporarily decoupled to save fuel.
